Night Terror

The night is closing.

Dark and so enveloping

My mind rests, cozy

But darkness hides great danger.

Faceless a knife glint

Or perhaps a gun is cocked.

My light is not on

The covers my only help.

I fear I’ll be killed.

I fear evisceration.

I must get up but

But I fear my exposure.

Lacking warm safety

I fear my mind is lying.

The dark man right there

Would be my trench coat.

To get up for light

To reveal my dumb mistake

Would be so pointless.

So, despite the tingling

Of fear down my spine

I lay my head down to rest.

And then felt a knife plunged into my spine.
